Rethinking Healthcare: A Path to Balance

This week, I had the honor of participating in a panel discussion on menopause alongside a conventional gynecologist and a psychologist. The event was enlightening, as it showcased contrasting perspectives between conventional and functional medicine. The questions posed by the audience underscored critical gaps in modern healthcare, revealing why many people seek alternatives like functional medicine.

Modern Health System

The Gaps in Conventional Healthcare

  • Limited Testing: In conventional medicine, testing is often restricted to what directly influences the immediate treatment plan. For example, hormone levels or liver function, critical to understanding overall health, are not routinely monitored unless symptoms escalate significantly. As a result, patients may never uncover the root causes of their imbalances.

  • Generic Hormonal Treatments: When it comes to menopause, the standard approach involves prescribing low doses of estrogen and progesterone, adjusted only if symptoms persist. This "one-size-fits-all" approach often overlooks other hormones, such as cortisol and DHEA, that profoundly impact mood, sleep, and overall well-being.

  • Time Constraints: Doctors in conventional healthcare often see patients for just 10–20 minutes. In that short time, they must listen, diagnose, and recommend treatment. This leaves little room to address lifestyle factors like nutrition, sleep quality, and stress management—all of which are critical to hormonal and overall health.

How Functional Medicine Fills the Gaps

Functional medicine takes a holistic approach, viewing the body as an interconnected system. Here’s how it differs:

  • Comprehensive Testing: We utilize broad diagnostic tools to identify imbalances rather than focusing solely on disease diagnosis.

  • Individualized Care: Treatments go beyond standard protocols to address unique hormonal needs, including stress-related hormones like cortisol.

  • Time and Attention: Consultations last 45–90 minutes, allowing for deep dives into lifestyle, nutrition, and stress management. The goal is to create a personalized plan that aligns with the patient’s unique needs.

When Conventional Medicine is Necessary

Functional medicine complements, rather than replaces, conventional care. In some cases, I refer clients to traditional healthcare providers for further diagnostics or treatments. For those already on medications, I ensure that my recommendations align safely with their current regimen and always encourage collaboration with their primary care doctor.

Why Functional Medicine?

For those who feel overlooked by conventional healthcare, functional medicine offers a different path. It’s about finding the root cause of imbalances and making sustainable lifestyle changes that promote natural healing and balance. This approach isn’t about quick fixes; it requires commitment and patience. But for those willing to take the journey, the results can be life-changing.

A Final Thought

Healthcare should empower individuals to understand and care for their bodies. Functional medicine offers this opportunity by addressing the whole person, not just the symptoms.

Because at the end of the day, the goal is simple: to stay healthy, balanced, and thriving. 🌿
